ILT Effectiveness

ILT Effectiveness Playlist:
Welcome to our workshop.  Our hope is that all who attend will be able to learn a bit more about the power of team work and Instructional Leadership Teams and takeaway a few tools to bring back to their school sites.  In addition we hope that this construct of a playlist will differentiate the learning and create points of interaction.

Goals:
  • What does the system for adult learning look like?
  • How does an ILT function as adult learners focused on instruction and school priorities?
  • As an ILT- how to prioritize and maintain the schools’ goals through your work with partners, PD, parents and staff?

1) Adult Learning- Why is it important to start here? Discuss this idea with the person you are sitting next to.  Then click on the link below and consider the reflection questions below:

a)
Reflection: How do these elements get implemented into a school setting?  What might that look like at your school?  Jot down a few ideas on the post-its at your table and be ready to share with your group.

b) Is Yours a Learning Organization?  Check out this article focusing on pages 3-6.  One can also take the online survey to learn more about one’s perceptions towards the learning capabilities of their school team.

Survey for measuring learning organization- (from Harvard Business Review article)

Goal: Adult learning needs to translate to achievement for youth!

2) What is an effective ILT structure?
Below are a series of references to go through.   Choose ones that speak to you and your interest.

A) Aspen Institute Guide- Description of Effective ILTs
http://preview.tinyurl.com/AspenInstituteILT  (Technology caveat- TinyURL takes you to a pre-screen asking if you want to go to the site. Click Proceed to the site.)

Reflection: Think about the descriptions of effective ILTs and the purpose they serve?  In what ways is your team similar and in what ways are they different?

B) Teaching Channel: The power of teams to transform a school
Watch the video below and think about what this school did and its impacts on student achievement.  What are the connections to Fullan’s lead drivers? To Pedro Noguera’s message regarding shared ownership?

Reflection: Think about your school and your current structure.  List the elements you have that are working to bring success.  Identify one or two areas you would like to see modified, changed, added or deleted.  Share your reflection here:  http://preview.tinyurl.com/ILTDesigns

C) Aspen Institute Material: The Role of the ILT with Common Core Implementation
This is a two-day presentation on developing the capacity of ILTs.  Flip through the different material and find one or two helpful slides to bring back to your team.

Reflection: What resonated with you?  What tools might be helpful to bring back?

D) Why norms- we are all adults?  Watch this video- learn how this one school has used norms to maintain consistency in your meeting practice.

Reflection: After watching this video- what did you observe that supported a collaborative, teaching culture?  How did teams sit?  What was visible?  What was said that resonated with you and your school’s team practice?

3) How do you prioritize and focus the work?  How do we make decisions?

This is where the rubber hits the road- what will your team need to focus on to be successful?

a) Review your school data in relation to the school accountability index:

Reflection: As you go through the above powerpoint and think about your school data- consider how many of your team members know this information and why it is important to know this information at the beginning of the year.

b) Besides quantitative data points what other data might you collect to determine a baseline and school focus?

c) How will you communicate your school goals and action plans/PD plans for the year to the school stakeholders?

One of the keys is to have a clear and concise document to use as a reference to help the team maintain focus.  Attached is an example that one can take and personalize.

D) Next is a common calendar to help everyone keep focused.  Attached is a calendar for 2014-15.  The grading window dates are a bit off and need to be personalized for your school.

Ultimately- school transformation and success depends upon effective instructional leadership teams!  Best of luck in 2014-15.  Feel free to reach out to us and your regional teams for support!
